But when you draw water continuously throughout the day from a full tank, RO will waste 300% more water to top off its tank after each use. So how much water is really wasted in a typical household? Let’s say a typical household uses one gallon of water a day in this manner: When you wake up in the morning, the RO holding tank is full. You draw water to make a pot of coffee. The RO will immediately begin to fill or “top off” its holding tank, replacing the water used by the coffee pot. The coffee pot used only 56 ounces of water leaving the tank 70 % full. Because of this, the RO will waste nearly 90% of the tap water used to fight the back-pressure created by the two-thirds full tank. At this point, only 10% of the water will actually pass thru the membrane. As a result, your home just wasted a little over 11 gallons of tap water to fill

Because of the tremendous back pressure created from a tank that nearly full, the RO will waste 96% of the tap water – meaning only 4% of the water will pass thru the membrane. As a result, your home just wasted over a gallon and a half of tap water to fill one glass of water. After incrementally producing just 1 gallon of drinking water throughout the day, an RO can waste 27 gallons of water. How does LINX Evolution Work? Rather than using pressure to force water thru a membrane, the LINX Evolution uses electricity to run water past special Ion Exchange membranes (not thru them), efficiently reducing TDS and harmful contaminants while creating minimal water waste.   2. this presentation is not fair enough even the posting of comment needs even an approval.. You forgot to mention that there's a way to eliminate the back pressure.. ^_^ then what kind of membrane you are using? A semi-permeable one that uses electricity? well that membrane must be an epic since it can recovery with the HIGHEST rate.. since you're not using a pump there's no other way to push the water through the membrane. what are u using? electrolysis?

  3. Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, there is no way to eliminate the back pressure in the tank, however it can be mitigated with a permeate pump to partially overcome it. In testing done by John VanNewenhizen (a long time Culligan technical manager) adding the permeate pump doubled efficiency thus raising water efficiency to from 6-28%. Since no pressure in the RO tank equals no flow at the faucet, the back pressure can not be completely eliminated.

  4. In response to your other concerns, LINX systems are not membrane filtration systems, rather they are ION EXCHANGE systems which utilize electricity instead of chemicals or salts. The water passes between the layers of the LINX ion exchange membrane (media) not through it, so feedwater pressure minus tank backpressure (net driving pressure) has NO effect on water efficiency.

    R/O is the best, avoid distilling and dab a bit of sea salt or himalayan salt into the water, not table salt which raises your blood pressure. if the salt is completely white, with no discolor then its devoid of minerals which means its table salt and its false advertising crap, no wonder they say salt increase blood pressure because its TABLE SALT FOR CHRISTS SAKE.
    just get an ro system and a fluoride meter to test it, its costly*

  6. Thank you for your comment. It is true, both reverse osmosis and LINX technology reduce contaminants similarly – about 95% reduction. Both systems also use sediment pre-filtration and carbon post-filtration so the product water is very similar. In addition, you can depend on both technologies to reduce fluoride by 90% or more.

I have RO and the information provided here does not hold true to my experience with my system.  It appears that the "facts" in this video do not hold true as my experience shows.  I'm wondering if this is wishful thinking.  Even if it is partial truth, it surely is not telling the whole story.  Honesty is the best policy.

  11. I installed a GE RO system in our home 6 months ago. We live in Monterey County and the average water bill here is $300-$400 per month. I had heard of the water waste and how I hear it going down the drain.

    I have since switched off the RO system

    I plan to bypass the RO component and just use the GE filtering system. If anyone has any instructions on how to do this, I would welcome it.


  12. I bought an iSpring RO system from Amazon. The waste:clean ratio is about 2:1. My family of 4 consumes about 2-3 gallons of RO water a day, so 4-6 gallons would be wasted. That's way less than the toilets, in which a pee uses 1.5 – 2.5 gallons to flush. You get the idea.

  14. i just saw a commercial from an Indian company called 'Kent' claiming their RO system wastes almost 0%! How does that work? Are they a technology similar to this Linx?

  16. When I started realizing the "waste water" of RO systems, I started to somewhat panic. Not only were the threads talking about the amount of water being "waste" but the cost associated with it. I then looked at my water bill and did some thinking on the cost of this "RO waste water". From my bill, the cost per gallon for water is less than a penny or at most a penny per gallon. If I then work that cost to the amount of possible water wasted by the RO system, it is far less than the amount I spent on buying filtered water from my local water store. So the cost is not such a concern anymore. But the real concern is the amount of "waste water" produced by the RO system. The 3-4 to 1 ratio is still a bit staggering. But if you think about it, it is probably the same for the water store where I purchased my 5 gallons of water. So the waste water either comes from my home or the water store. Since the dollar amount of the waste water is not much of a concern for me, it is now the actual "waste" amount that I can recover to be used else where. So for those who are concerned about the waste water, like me, try to figure out a way to recover the water. The threads and other sources do provide excellent suggestions on how to go about using the waste water from the RO system. Just as an FYI, there are RO systems out there that do provide a way to reuse the waste water…it's worth to spend a little time to research your options. You can either start drilling a hole through your brick wall or attach a pump to recycle the waste water.

I have had a Whirlpool RO system for @ 7 yrs.  Since I pay $ 15 / month for unlimited water, coupled with a septic tank, I didn't pay much attention to any ' wasted ' water.  It would have been easy to run the discharge hose out to the garden, rather than have it connected to the sink drain. 

  20. I went to your website and was looking at this system. I was interested until I saw the "REQUEST A QUOTE". I'm sorry but you know how much the system sells for. I shouldn't need to request ANYTHING. I don't need to talk to a sales person I don't need to hear your infomercial "if you order in the next 15 min we're running a special" CRAP. All I want is an honest price. If it's XXX.XX and I'll need XXXXXXX on top of that, all you have to do is say so. Its a solid price. Your hardware isn't gold and based on a fluctuating market. Yes it looks like a good system but if you can't even tell me how much it is then it's not worth looking at buying. 

  21. I was able to bypass the Reverse osmosis system with a call to the GE support line and now use just a single filter from the system. 
    The GE Reverse Osmosis system works well, but is hugely wasteful and we in Monterey County have severe water restrictions and water is very expensive.
    I had to take the unit apart and connected the water input to the second filter.

    I still have the tank but its switched off. I removed all of the other pieces.
    Now I have mains pressure filtered water…. it tastes fine.

  22. If you put a permeate pump (powered by the waste water pressure) between the reverse osmosis unit and the storage tank, the additional water loss due to backpressure from the water tank is almost eliminated.

    If you also use a modern "Sidestream" RO membrane (you need a new membrane housing) with a booster pump, the clean water to waste water ratio can be as low as 1:1. Even better, you could get a 300 or 500 GPD unit and run it as a direct flow system, removing your water tank (and the need for the permeate pump).

I have it wastes 2 gallons of water for every 1 gallon it purifies.  This information is from 2010, so I understand.  In choosing a purifier, I chose the R.O. for these reasons:  I have no water use restrictions, The yearly cost of maintaining the R.O.  is dang near $25.00., and I purchased the R.O. for $500.00. The system is estimated to last at least 10 years.  So mainly it will cost me much less to have an R.O. than most other types of water purifiers.

  24. I dont doubt your information as it is true. However it simply is one sided solution the way you address this matter. Another method of sales pitch for Linx. Very effective one too which brings the question are you for hire?:)
    I dont produce or focus on water treatment systems sales but water is one every company should considered even homes. RO systems nowadays comes with individual colored line make the waste water easy to be collected and reused for plants and other applications.

    Amount of water,I thought Linx system is an exaggeration but they are telling the truth. I've done it myself trying to get all the water from the waste and couldn't keep up how fast 30 gallons of water got wasted just to get 3 gallons of clean water. The waste water is perfectly clean and u can use it for so many things around the house.
    I am very dissapointed about ro and can't believe the degree of ignorance creating this wasteful system. Imagine if millions have been sold how many fucking millions of gallon we are wasting,this ro system shouldn't be legal for home use considering that in so many countries they don't have water to drink period!
    The water bill came and I found out since I've bought the system I've doubled the amount of water
    Using 3000 gallons extra in just one month. I will try to do something to the system since the waste water is better than tap water, I will connect the waste to filter it again,will see how is that going to come out, it should be perfectly fine, if not I will look into different water systems including Linx .

  26. I do not see it as wasting water. Reverse osmosis removes all of the crap you do not want to drink in the first place. 

  27. If you can somehow make this system be electricity free. Then I will bow to it lol. Other than that there are still solutions to RO, like a permeate pump, that significantly reduces back pressure. 

  28. THis is why one uses a pressure pump on the system. THe pump uses no electricity and uses the back pressure of the effluen water to increase pressure to the storage tank, liminating excess waste water. They are chap and readily available.

  31. It sucks that we have to pay our water company in Vegas for water that isn't even drinkable. And you have to buy a chlorine filter to water your garden as it kills the microbes in the soil. I'm currently shopping for an RO because it's a pain to lug home cases of bottled water from the store every week (which also comes from an RO system as it says on the bottles). Yeah it wastes water, but we need pure water to live.

  33. Would your system (LINX WATER) be able to produce Industrial Water i.e. the water with reduced conductivity up to 100,000 Ohms or in term of conductivity less than 10 Micro Siemens. Off course TDS and other traces like Sulfates and Chlorides should be within  their PPM limits.

  34. I just installed an RO system at home that makes one gallon of RO water for every 2 gallons of influent water. I further eliminate water waste by collecting the drain water into a barrel for gardening. We recorded the test result and uploaded here.

  37. As I found out the hard way, ROs are not designed to filter out pharmaceuticals and if your city recycles it's water the concentrations will keep building up. I ended up with a water distiller from Amazon that cost about the same as my RO system.

  38. If your RODI system is using 13.5 gallons of water to make 1.5 gallons there is something seriously wrong with that system. My 3-gallon system waists less than 1 gallon. A bit of research will expose this scare tactic.

Wasting 13.5 (yes exactly that specific number lol) pe 1.5 gallon of RO water, not sure what planet you are on by non of my RO set ups waste anywhere near that figure, maybe with RO you could see 2/3 waste (but I´m pushing it) so imagine you drink let´s say 1 gallon of water a day/person just to make calculations simple as can be, then you waste 2.

    So let me ask you, how often do you shower and for how long, how much water do you think you waste when taking a shower? Do you have a lawn and/or maybe some fruit trees and if so how do you water them, I bet you could make a real impact as far as water is concerned if you truly wanted to but people much rather just want to feel they did good, not actually doing something that will impact reality.

    Do you hear that soft spoken lovely woman voice talking to you in a 100% non threatening/challenging way, do you hear that stupid music in the background sounding so extremely typical, yeah I bet you heard that one before? Commercials, ring a bell?

  40. I agree w/Arne!! I am a licensed professional engineer and I object to your claims. I live in a highly mineralized, arsenic content area & I have made precise measurements for my R.O. system. Arne is correct in that approximately three gallons or less is required to produce one gallon of R.O. water. The extra two gallon loss in my system is simply routed to my vegetable garden beds so it is not wasted. Please verify your claims w/some evidence. Thank you.

  41. Seems like a nice idea, but not even showing prices on your website smacks of bait and switch, one thing this industry is well known for. Is it 3 grand? Is it a few hundred? Is it the same price in every market? lol, probably not. Who knows, but if I give you all my info and set myself up for annoying follow up emails, sure then you will talk about it. Here we are 5 years after the video went up and still no easily found prices but still a lot of hyperbole about cost of ownership. Nah, pass.

  42. So best option, while using RO is to empty entire pressure tank by filling up all the contained or what ever needs you have at once. It is little extra labor, but worth it. That will leave tank empty and filling take from ~0 to 100. That will minimize water waste at max level.

Please clear up all the questions once and for all and you will sell. I may be interested as a dealer but I need ALL the facts without wasting my time.. I support the horticultural industry and seek a good unit that greatly reduces ppms as low as RO does, at max efficiency.   46. Whereas waste water from reverse osmosis can be recirculated once before permanently removing it from the loop. When out of the loop it can be used for yard cleaning lawn maintenance etc, So little would be actually wasted. The Lynx system does not say how much electricity it consumes or what total TDS can be over its cycle. In brief it is at face value an attractive proposition. However I would like some nitty gritty detail about its cycle figures before opting out of ro

  47. I can tell you this video is not correct. my RO does 4 gallons in 1.5 hrs. making 4 gallons waste 16 gallons of waste water.

    In Livonia MI water is about $5 per unit.
    A unit is 750 gallons.
    If an RO is waisting 10,000 gal a year.
    Thats 10,000g ÷ 750g = 13.3 units
    13.3 units at $5 each is only about $67 a year in waiste. Still not bad for 96% floride free water compared to the $10 a month i spend in bottled water.

  51. these systems are extremely problematic in my opinion (especially with hard water), the drain solenoids and modified air gaps plug up with calcium deposits very quickly, these systems are also prone to overheating and leaking


    System requires the use of a water storage tank and faucet (sold separately)

    Warranty voided if water pressure exceeds 100 psi. If water pressure exceeds 100 psi, a pressure regulator must be installed.

  54. Once you run it through the pre-filters , you can chain link it through 3 RO filters like this- RO mebrane (brackish) waste water goes to the next inlet of the ROfilter and that wast water goes to the next RO filter you have.
    Use setvalve (TAP opened slightly) to keep the pressure high in the last brakish water out. So you have 1 feed line (council water) and 3 RO filtered water going to storage and 1 waste water of limited water.

    RO systems need pre-filters to remove sand and iron they can not deal with solids.
    Or and this is no problem at all for a RO filter you have a tap on 1 RO filter on the brackish water and every 50liters you use you open the waste water and flush the waste out. <<< So that would be 2lt (or less) of waste waster to 50lt of RO filtered water …. as long as you have the pre-filters the RO sytem will cope with that just like these high wast systems.
    Both those systems produce clean under 10ppm ROwater and my filters are about 4 years old on the first example.
    and 2 years on second example.
    More than 1 way to skin a cat.

  55. If you read my comment and see how I crunched these numbers you'll see why this LINX system is complete waste of money (and electricity)

    If you use an auto shut off valve (when the pressure reaches a certain PSI the system shuts off) then you eliminate constant water running. I measured what I get out of a full RO tank (about 2.9 gallons) and put the RO waste hose into a large plastic container (probably around 20 gallons) and it appeared there was approximately 6 gallons of water for the 2.9 gallons of drinkable RO water. What I will say is my home has relatively low water pressure not ridiculously low but not really high like some places so I'm not sure if that has something to do with it. Plus my water bill was always around $30 a month and didn't see but maybe 1 or 2 dollar a month water bill increase since it went from about $28 to $30 using the crap out of the RO system to cook, drink etc..

    So with that logic I've seen a $24 a year increase in my water bill and bought a 2 year supply of RO filters & membranes for around $100 so I use around $50 a year in filters and so if the water bill increase for the whole year is $24 the $24+$50=$74 is about the approximate cost of maintenance for using my RO system. I seriously doubt this LINX system could beat that in cost. When I used to buy gallons of water refilled at the local water machine I'd spend about $200 a year just filling reusable water jugs… lol. Watering a lawn is a far bigger deal as far as water waste IMO… I mean think about it you're spraying water over a species of grass that is usually not native to your region to make it look ridiculously green. As far as what to do with the RO waste water, the truth is if you own a home drill a hole in the wall behind the sink and run the waste line outside and use it to fill a giant 200 gallon rainwater tank (or whatever size a 55 gallon drum will do) which you can then pipe in the RO rejection waste water to the outdoor tank to then water the plants/garden/grass. Some people get nifty and hook up a tank to their washing machine so that the water doesn't really go to waste.

    So the LINX system uses around 250 watts per gallon. That's 250 watts produced probably burning coal from a power plant so that's not helping the environment… If your electric bills are an average of $0.11 a kwh its around $0.03 per gallon. If you use 4 gallons a day its around 11 cents a day x 30 days in a month its about $3.30 dollars a month. If you have a 2:1 RO system it's going to be around $75 a year give or take the cost of water in your area. Plus the fact that you can go online buy a 2 years supply of RO filters for $100 ($50 dollars a year in RO filters and membranes per year) you can just buy a a ready to set up RO kit on ebay for $105 and for me I had observed a $1-2 a month water bill increase using an RO system has cost me around $75 a year in routine maintenance for the 2:1 RO system.

    There is just no way LINX can justify charging $600+ for a water filter unit and $200 for filters which need to be changed about twice a year unless you virtually never use the system. Between the $400 in filters annually and about $40 a year in electricity and the $10 for actual water usage you are spending about $450 a year to maintain this LINX system which more than the water usage plus the cost of the entire RO system and 2 years supply of RO filters… I mean really what a joke. When you crunch the numbers you realize how much of a scam this whole thing is. I mean seriously I could buy water from a water machine for 50 cents a gallon and based on my family's usage it's around $200 a year to buy water at the store or I can pay $75 a year to run my RO system and waste a few gallons or put in my washing machine/garden via a storage tank. What an idiotic sales pitch.

  57. Wanna talk about water waste?? The average house pumps 1200-2400 gallons of water out the sprinkler system per week. Yeah RO uses a lot of water but not really, we are talking about a small bit of waste compared to the big picture. RO with booster pump, aso and tank wastes 1:4. direct RO with booster pump wastes 1:3. direct ro with booster pump and two membranes in serial connection wastes 1:1.5

    increased waste with tank is because of back pressure, it the reason for waste.
    aso reduces tank capacity to 60%, leading to less waste, but also less tank capacity.
    permeate pump links pressure of waste water to clean water, increasing throughput against pressure of tank; however its membrane is fragile, and its useless if there is no backpressure (direct flow)
    booster/membrane pump increases total pressure, decreasing waste.
    booster/membrane pump can provide enough pressure for using several membranes in consequent/serial connection, halving the waste at double output.

    in worst case, RO can waste 1/20 – this is when tank is used, but no ASO, which is NEVER the case.
    in worst case, RO wastes 1/6, which can be fixed by adding permeate system; or replacing membrane with nano-membrane and removing the tank; or upgrading to booster pump.

    the linx system uses ion-exchangers which are easily clogged, 1-year best-before and do not even close have filtering power of RO. linx system is much worse than RO.

  63. Distillation will remove almost as many contaminants, with almost zero waste water. It will remove lead, chromium (all metals, in fact) as well as most pharmaceuticals, chlorine and Fluorine/Fluoride. Time-of-process is comparable to RO, without costly replacement filters. If you start with 5-7 stage sediment filtration water, it is easy to get RO quality without RO costs or waste!

I run a 100 GPD dual membrane with a 800 mL flow restrictor, and my RODI has a ratio of 1:1.6 of product to waste, and takes about 7 minutes to filter a gallon of PURE water. RODI is a balance of water pressure, flow restriction and water temperature. Distillation doesn't NOT remove the same number of heavy metals as RODI, which is why they are NOT commonly used when pure water is required, such as in any clinical, or medical environment. This advert as it relates to RODI is completely false, and just filled with inaccurate information. If you want to sell your product, try sticking to the "pro's" of your product, and don't compare and contract to other filtration systems, as it is inferior. SAD, SAD, SAD!

  65. Filter cost? Depending on the setup, and water quality, membranes can last anywhere between 1.5 – 2.5 years. A good GE depth filter is about $15, carbon filter $10 – $22 and DI resin $20. You are talking about MAYBE $60 – $80 / year, again depending on water quality, number of pple and/or pets in a household, the volume of water consumed, either for drinking and/or cooking (worst case). I spend very little. Don't be fooled, distillation does not produce the same quality of purification as a RODI. My yellow lab loves it, paws up.

  67. I've got a system that produces 1.5 gallons per minute and wastes the same. 4"x48" membrane @ 90 psi. Lot's of misinformation out there but these little under the sink systems are very inefficient.

  68. The most scary thing about this video is that more than 355,000 actually watched it! The point of an RO is to eliminate 95% of all of the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) in the water. That is everything in our water that is not water…all the bad stuff. The amount of water wasted with an RO depends on the quality of the membrane. It is true that the RO systems you get at Home Depot or department stores do waste a lot of water. But, it is no where near what this video suggests. The worst I have ever seen is a 6:1 ratio. It wastes 6 gallons to make 1 gallon of good water. The problem is, that are the really cheap systems. If you buy a cheap RO, you are getting low quality. Makes sense, right? There are membranes (Pentair) that have 1:1 ratio's. Also, the only way you can affect the TDS level in the water is through a reverse osmosis system. Of course it's going to waste water. It is letting the good water through to the tank and eliminating the bad water to the sewer. It HAS to waste some water. Where would the bad stuff in the water go if it didn't? But, please don't think the numbers shown in this video are anywhere near what a good RO will waste. It simply isn't true.

    As far as this LINX system this video is trying to SELL you….it isn't doing anything to the TDS in the water. Ion exchange is the same technology as a water softener. It may remove the calcium and magnesium from the water, but it is doing nothing for the TDS. Total Dissolved Solids are "Dissolved Solids". Stuff that is so small that the only thing that will remove them is the semi-permeable membrane of an RO….making it ideal drinking water. This LINX system is doing nothing for the quality of your water. Like I said…the most scary thing about this video is that over 355,000 people actually watched it and may have actually believed what they heard. It's alarming what you can find on You Tube!

  69. This is a very dumb video. The water in cities is recycled. Meaning everything you flush down your drains your going to be drinking again. Thats how the water got so bad in the first place. I think in time cleaning and dumping the left over crap is going to make the filters need to be replaced over time sooner since the PPM will start to increase the more they have to keep adding to make it simi sanitary. Of course we dont need flouride, chlorine and nitrates but who knows when that will stop. Also we have more then enough water on this planet, and its not going anywhere. We just have to keep cleaning it.

  71. This video is totally wrong. I have a Culligan Water reverse osmosis and it only wastes 1 gallon for every 1 gallon of clean water. Plus its the only way to remove 99% of the contaminates. Only the cheap home depot and other department stores reverse osmosis waste a lot of water. Plus Culligan has rental options for super cheap and they put it under full warranty and do all the maintenance!
