Giving women their quality of life back | Dr. Tirsit Asfaw | Weill Cornell Medicine

I don’t think there is a single part of
this organization that is done without keeping in mind what it is to be a
patient everything from arrival until the
patient leaves is done through the eyes of a patient what what matters were you
know people forget we are patients do you know my family gets care here I see
things from a different perspective as a physician but then when I am a patient
and my family members are patients and happy surgery here they get that
experience too that they actually are being taken care of when choosing
your gynecologist you’re trusting someone to take care of you and operate on you
whether it’s you or your you know loved ones so trust and having that sort of
relationship initially is very important I want patients to feel comfortable you
know what the first thing I try to find something common with them I’m a
mom just like they are and I’m a you know a lot of the things that they feel
like nobody else has had this but me you know they’re just so surprised to you
know what I tell them this is what I do every day you are not the only one that
they’re you know I am specifically trained to take care of people like you
we plan for the crib we plan for the baby shower and everything else we never
planned for what could potentially happen to a woman’s body afterwards
nothing makes me happier that a woman coming saying you know what I could not
jump on the trampoline with my kids you know now I’m planning out running the
New York City Marathon it’s a field where you give a woman her life back her
quality of life back I am very lucky to work in a department that has a very
rich history in women’s care and advocacy when I got the opportunity to
come start the division of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery here
it was a no-brainer I’m very proud to say that I work with an amazing group of
physicians nurses support staff who every day come in with a smile on their
face and I are happy to be here and it’s fairly evident patients don’t really
care about how much you know until they know how much you care and that’s really
sort of what I tried to impart I want them to understand I’m a partner I’m a
sort of a part of this whole picture every single one of their victories is
you know I think of as a victory for myself and I see that really as why I
wake up every single day to come work.
